This time of year many of us are traveling to see friends and family. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to have a dental emergency out of town around the holidays, often when it is least convenient. What can you do to avoid finding yourself in this situation? What happens if you do have a dental emergency out of town?
- First of all, if you are having any dental concerns, do NOT ignore them. If treatment has been recommended earlier in the year, we strongly urge you to get it completed before you go out of town, especially if your dentist has stressed that it is a time sensitive issue.
- Be aware of how you are treating your teeth! The holidays are a time when we often indulge in more sweets than usual. Be aware of your sugar intake and be sure to take your toothbrush with you as you travel.
- Use extra caution when eating sticky, chewy, or hard foods or consider avoiding them altogether. These foods can be more likely to cause dental emergencies such as cracked teeth, cavities, or dislodged fillings.
- If you do find yourself in a dental emergency out of town, you should have a dental professional evaluate the problem. Self diagnosing, or trying to fix a problem yourself, can often lead to more severe problems. First, contact your dentist for recommendations on a plan of action. If it is a problem requiring immediate attention, they may know of a dentist in the area. If they do not know of anyone for referral, ask your family members or friends if they have a recommendation for a dental professional in the area. A dental professional will be able to ease your pain and provide you with a temporary, or possibly permanent, fix.
As soon as you return home, make sure to make an appointment with your home dentist to get the problem area evaluated. Here at Adams and Cheek Dentistry, we are always happy to answer any questions that you may have. Please feel free to call us at 919.866.1360 or click here to reach us online.
Happy Holidays from all of us to you!
