It’s that time of year again when the mist of yellow pollen begins to cover everything as far as the eye can see. Many of us are affected by the pollen we do see as well as other allergens we cannot see.
What many people don’t realize is that allergies can affect dental health. Let’s take a look at a couple of dental symptoms that are prevalent during allergy season.
Tooth Pain
During allergy season, patients may notice an increase in tooth pain even though clinically the tooth is fine. This pain mostly occurs in the molars and becomes more prevalent as the immune system deals with congestion. Sinus pain often feels like tooth pain, especially in top teeth, because the roots of the upper molars are located so close to the maxillary sinus. Patients may also notice an increase in sensitivity to cold and hot foods and beverages.
Dry Mouth
Seasonal allergies also cause dry mouth for a couple of reasons. When we are congested, we breathe out of our mouths more, causing our mouths to be drier. Additionally, antihistamines we take to help control our allergies dry out our mouths as well.
Bad Breath
Along with allergies comes nasal drainage. This postnasal drip into the throat causes bacteria in the oral cavity to multiply, therefore, resulting in bad breath.
It is often difficult to determine which dental symptoms need attention and which ones can be monitored at home. The staff at Adams and Cheek Dentistry is more than happy to evaluate ANY concern you may have about any dental problems. It is important not to dismiss tooth pain just because you assume it is from allergies. Please feel free to call us at 919.866.1360 or click here to schedule an appointment.
