Enamel is the outer layer of the tooth and the hardest tissue in the human body. Unfortunately, tooth enamel does not have living cells and therefore cannot repair itself. Once enamel chips or erodes, there is no way to get it back. Let’s look at some ways to take care of our enamel so that it will last the life of the tooth!
Use Xylitol Products
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener that has been found to actually prevent tooth decay. It has been incorporated in numerous products, the most common being toothpaste, gum, and toothpaste. Look for xylitol on the label of your favorite products and include it into your daily routine!
Avoid Soda and Fruit Juices
Sodas and fruit juices contain acids more corrosive than battery acid. Consuming these beverages on a regular basis causes serious damage to enamel. It is important to enjoy these beverages in moderation and to rinse with water immediately after consumption.
Chew Gum
Many foods we eat leave our mouths highly acidic even hours after we have eaten. Chewing sugarless gum between meals help neutralize these acids which helps prevent tooth decay.
Don’t Brush Immediately After Swimming or Drinking Coffee/Wine
Many people know that wine and coffee are highly acidic. However, chlorine in swimming pools is also very acidic. While it is crucial to brush acidic solutions off of teeth so the enamel does not erode, it is important to wait at least an hour before doing so.
