Eating in between meals is sometimes a habit, sometimes a necessity. Children especially often need snacks between meals. With so many sugary and unhealthy choices at the grocery store, it’s difficult to always know what snacks are good for you and/or good for your oral health. Let’s look at some healthy snack options that are also good for your oral health.
low sugar yogurt
Yogurt can help bad breath! Studies have shown that some of the good bacteria in yogurt reduce the levels of odor-causing bacteria in the mouth.
raw veggies and fruit
Fibrous fruits and vegetables actually help clean your teeth. Some good examples include celery, carrots, apples, and oranges. Really all raw fruits and veggies are good options!
hard boiled eggs
This snack provides vitamin D to help keep your teeth and bones strong. Vitamin D also promotes absorption of calcium.
veggies and hummus
For those of you who don’t care to eat plain raw veggies, pairing with hummus is a healthy option. Hummus is low in sodium and high in protein. It is also a much healthier option than ranch-based veggie dips.
apple and peanut butter
This healthy combo provides protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Purchasing all natural peanut butter without added sugar is best.
cheese
Cheese provides good amounts of calcium, protein, and vitamins which are good for oral and overall health.
In order to maintain good oral health, it’s important to avoid foods and beverages high in sugar. While there is an abundance of high sugar options at the grocery store, there are also many healthy ones that are yummy, too!
