Dental Emergencies-What To Do and When To Call Us

Like most emergencies, dental emergencies happen at unpredictable, inconvenient times. Failure to seek treatment for a dental emergency may increase the risk of permanent damage or more expensive treatment later. Conversely, you can easily treat some situations at home. Here are some examples of dental emergencies and advice on what to do and when to call your dentist.

Broken Tooth

Call your dentist right away. Save any pieces of broken teeth, rinse gently, and store in a sanitary container. If your gums or jaw are sore, ice the area until your dentist can see you.

Loose or Knocked Out Tooth

Gently rinse off the knocked out tooth without removing any attached connective tissue.  If the tooth is loose, hold the tooth in place in the socket.  If the tooth is totally knocked out, place in a sanitary container and bring it with you to your dentist. Placing the tooth in milk may also help preserve the tooth.

Bitten Cheek, Lip, or Tongue

Gently clean the area and apply a cold compress to the area.  If bleeding does not stop quickly, immediately go see your dentist or go straight to a hospital emergency room.

Tooth Pain

If you are having pain radiating from your actual teeth, call a dentist immediately.

Lost Dental Filling or Dental Crown

Call your dentist immediately. After they get more information about your lost filling or crown, they may offer a temporary solution such as over-the-counter dental cement.  (Note this is ONLY a temporary solution until you are seen by your dentist.)

Dental Abscess

If you notice a bump or pimple on your gums, call your dentist immediately! This may indicate a dental abscess.  A dental abscess is active infection that can spread to other areas of your body.
